Shit Just Got Real...

Trophy Wife Barbie is the brainchild of Annelies Hofmeyr, a 39-year old South African-born, Australian-based conceptual artist. Hofmeyr's main goal with this project is to highlight the limitations of labels and to explore gender issues and the modern female identity. Annelies doesn't usually speak about herself in the third person like this.

The most frequently asked question is 'Why does Barbie have antlers?'. Short answer: they're a physical representation of a label imposed on her, likening her to a hunting trophy; something to be owned.

Barbie, as a timeless icon - recognized by everyone but carrying meaning that varies tremendously with the viewer - affords a medium that’s highly relatable and amusing.

The work is an invitation to consider what might happen if we focus on the things we have in common, rather than fear the things that make us different. That, and owning the shit out of whatever you're unwilling or unable to change. More about that on the BLOG

Following the rapid growth of Trophy Wife Barbie on social media, Annelies is launching a line of products to keep the conversations going offline as well as online. Check out the PRINTS page and don't forget to sign up to the MAILING LIST if you want to stay up to date with all things TWB-related.
